Hope and Change: CNN “Poll of Polls” Shows HopenChange Approval Below 60%; Rasmussen at -6 Approval Index

July 18, 2009

It would appear the cult of Obama continues to take a hit when confronted with the reality that his policies suck:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows that 29% of the nation’s voters now Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Thirty-five percent (35%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of –6 (see trends).

In the health care debate, 50% of voters now oppose creation of a public insurance company to compete with private insurers. Seventy-eight percent (78%) believe that health care reform is likely to lead to middle class tax hikes.

Lest conservatives be accused of cherry-picking from Rusmussen (often seen by liberals as biased for conservatives), even CNN notes that the new car smell is wearing out of the Obama administration:

An average of five national polls conducted in July indicates that President Barack Obama’s approval rating has slipped under 60 percent.Fifty-seven percent of Americans surveyed approve of the job Obama’s doing as president, according to a CNN Poll of Polls compiled and released Friday, with 36 percent disapproving. In early June, Obama’s average approval rating was 62 percent. It dropped a point to 61 percent by mid-June and stayed at that level through the rest of the month.

“Recent polls indicate that Obama’s lowest ratings — and biggest losses — come on the public’s perception of how he is handling the economy,” says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

If you have time, take a quick gander at the comments at the bottom of the CNN page.  You’ll note that there are two boilerplate responses from liberals: 1. Bush sucked worse, and 2. You can’t expect him to fix this mess in six months.

Far from just not fixing the “mess”, it’s quite clear at this point that President Obama has made things infinitely worse.  A stimulus bill designed to keep unemployment from reaching eight percent has done nothing to keep it from reaching 9.5%, his cap-and-kill policies are about as popular as polka music, and people are scared to death of his health care plan.  How much longer are we supposed to wait before declaring his policies a complete disaster?

Obama’s popularity has ever been fueled by the intense cult of personality that surrounds him.  Time and again, when people are polled on specific Obama policies, they run screaming like vampires fleeing sunlight; when asked if they personally approve of President Obama, however, they have answered in the affirmative.  People don’t think his policies will work, yet they trust him to make it all work somehow.  As it becomes more evident that his policies are demonstrable failures, people will continue to trust and approve of him less and less.
